The association was founded in 1936 as a non-profit international retail organization with members and activities spanning the globe.
The association is headquartered in the United States, while the organizer, SHOP!ecao, is based in Hong Kong, China. Its operations are entirely international. The Shop! Awards competition began in 1958 and, after over 60 years of development, now takes place in 25 countries and regions, including China, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Australia, and Japan.
